Revolver is a film that is easily
misunderstood, to the extent it can be understood. It was released and
then re-released, in part because it's a film so complex that mainstream
reviewers generally dismissed it as a not very-well done gangster movie from
Guy Ritchie. Some say that the script was heavily influenced by Kabbalah
(Jewish mysticism). Jake Green is a similar figure to "Mr.
Anderson," a.k.a. "Neo," the character Keanu Reeves plays
in The Matrix and Revolver is in this sense another take on the
Plato's Cave parable. As Morpheus told Neo when they first meet:
"...You are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage,
born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison...for your
mind...." Whereas Mr. Anderson becomes Neo through a process of
choosing the red pill over the blue, and then unplugging from the Matrix – a
taxing, physically painful process – Jake Green's awakening process is less
science fiction and more internal. Throughout most of Revolver, we are
offered Jake's inner thoughts through the skillful use of voiceovers. At times
Jake's inner voice(s) seem to be contradictory, as if he is alternatively
listening to two voices that sound like Jake, but voices that offer very
different perspectives. Revolver is a- must see for one on the path.
