Be a crappy citizens!

Others are not concerned with you. They are concerned with themselves and the society.
Society is concerned with itself, and that's how it should be.

They are not concerned that you should become a self-knower. They are concerned that you should become an efficient part in the mechanism of the society. You should fit into the pattern. So they want you to have an ego that fits with society. They teach you morality. Morality means giving you an ego which will fit with the society. If you are immoral, you will always be a misfit somewhere or other. That's why we put criminals in the prisons - not that they have done something wrong, not that by putting them in the prisons we are going to improve them, no. They simply don't fit. They are troublemakers. They have certain types of egos of which the society doesn't approve. If the society approves, everything is good. One man kills somebody - he is a murderer and the same man in wartime kills thousands - he becomes a great hero. The society is not bothered by a murder, but the murder should be commited for the society - then it is okay. The society doesn't bother about morality. Morality means only that you should fit with the society. If the society is at war, then the morality changes.
If the society is at peace, then there is a different morality. Morality is a social politics. It is diplomacy. And each child has to be brought up in such a way that he fits into the society, that's all. Because society is interested in efficient members. Society is not interested that you should attain to self-knowledge.

Knowing you don't know

Knowing you don’t know is a start
But when you don’t know
That you don’t know
Then the burden is lifted

In your total not knowing
You are free
Even to seek

You can’t see yourself from here
Maybe if you walk over there
You can see yourself
From there

The mystery shrouds itself
In logic

That which you are trying to
Transcend

Mind Control

I could have gotten into a practices to subdue any thoughts I had which told the story about “me”, by reasoning them away with my realisation that “me” didn’t really exist. Plenty of people do this because there are plenty of people teaching it. It’s mind control – it trains the mind to only think in a certain way and dismisses all other thoughts that arise, until they no longer are a problem.

For a mind that has been previously troubled it is a cool place to hang out. It’s certainly true that with inspection of the thinking mind that there is nothing of any substance to be found so the idea that thoughts are actually empty, can appear very real. The more the thoughts disappear the more you are left with the thought of “I am” in its root form, without any conditions attached to it. This is what we are told is at the essence of self enquiry but this is really just limiting enquiry and practice to a mental level. It’s not the complete picture and even Ramana, who taught to keep attention fixed on the root “I am” thought with enquiry of “Who am I?” also said that “Only after the vasanas have been destroyed can one attain liberation”. That’s quite a big statement in just a few words.

The tendencies we have are not just our mental thoughts but they are linked to our emotions and our emotions are mostly repressed, stored as energy in the emotional body. They cannot be removed by a mental process of quieting the mind by dismissing mental stories about “me”. As the thoughts are connected to the emotions, quieting the mind actually sedates the emotional body. With no thoughts arising there is nothing to stir up the dormant emotional energies. Life may appear very pleasant, calm and peaceful and certainly a million times better than being led around by a frantic, incessant thinking mind but in effect what has happened is a spiritual bypass. You don’t get enlightenment by thinking away the “me” out of existence just as you don’t get enlightenment by behaving in a loving, compassionate and ‘enlightened’ way. These are just concepts and mental fixes for the ego.

You don’t reach emptiness by finding emptiness in your thoughts and emotions. It’s like being parched on a scorching hot day with your body racked with thirst and every cell screaming out for fluid and then drinking from an empty glass. Mentally you may be able to reason away your thirst with the realisation that what you are feeling is just emptiness but sooner or later the body organism will win and drive you to the fullness of picking up a glass with real, wet water in it. Emptiness is not something you find but something which is revealed when you have gone through the fullness. Our emotional bodies are full to the brim of suppressed, unfelt feelings. All of them are just lying in a dormant state waiting for the invitation to be felt to their very fullest, allowing them to be expressed in the most vivid, expansive way. It’s a vibrant energetic process, not a calm sedate one. It’s about being awake, not sleeping.

Buying a spiritual bypass is not something I would recommend either but there are plenty of people selling it. Observe them for long enough and you may actually see the sleeping dog stirring beneath the facade they present. Buyer Beware.

I don´t exist

About three years ago I went to a non-duality meeting. Spirituality had turned into a nightmare and I was very alone and unable to relate to anyone around me. I was expecting (from the meeting) to find a teacher and meet people who I could relate to. Instead it was like landing on an alien planet. The speaker talked about the “me” not existing and how great it was to realise that in life. It was all very simple and casual and there were no more problems and everything was just wonderful. Nothing the speaker said addressed my issues, so I used the question and answer session after to get some help on the emotional trouble I was having. The answer I got to my first question was that “I” didn’t exist and therefore neither did my problems. I asked three more questions, although this time I was interrupted every time I mentioned the word “I”. Of course, I was told that “I” didn’t exist so the rest of my question was not relevant. I really knew I was in the wrong place when I observed the rest of the session turned out to be an intellectual pissing match on who could come up with the most abstract, cryptic, nonsensical description of the enlightenment state, with back slaps all round for those who could prove they “got it” and became members of this elite clique.

Maybe that was the cosmic joke and it was on me, that it really was just all that simple; just say that “I” don’t exist and one day I would find myself walking down the street and stepping into non-dual awareness with not a care in the world and here I was making such a big deal about all this stuff that was happening to me. What I experienced at that meeting was not unusual and I am very often read descriptions or listen to people talk about this enlightenment/ liberation process and I am left wondering what they are talking about. How does something that can’t be described, get described in the most complicated way and get debated over as to who has got it right or not? How does spiritual work get to be about having an experience of something and then being able to describe it?

Abracadabra

Abraham Hicks Seminar juli 2013:

Thoughts are dead

There used to be a stream of thought in me, and they were given constant attention. I believed almost every thing they told me, and they told me plenty. The vast majority of it turned out to be untrue but I did not see that. It never occurred to me that I might want to question them in any way. They seemed utterly compelling. How did I leave behind this deeply entangling and profoundly confusing rat’s nest? The first and biggest realization was triggered by seeing that the thoughts I’d accepted without question for forever were simply not correct,- thoughts had conjured a world, attributed motives and values and meanings to people and situations, and then added the extra bonus of judgments. Every bit of it imagined and then believed. Story after story, after story. How much of this is playing out in your life? Look carefully. If there are thoughts that say something should not be, or that something is supposed to be present that isn’t, and you buy into them, then thoughts are weaving their hypnotizing magic. If there is sadness, depression, anger, guilt, shame… there are thoughts embraced at their root. When thoughts are telling us -This is how the world is or is supposed to be, then they are assuming the position of dictator in our life. And we give the power to do that via our constant attention and conscious or unconscious belief in them. They speak. We listen. And then the games go on. Look closely with a quiet mind for a moment, where do thoughts come from? Can that place be located in your direct experience? Does it even exist? Where do they go? Is that place findable?
